IITs are leading the charge in excellence and innovation in data science education says Imarticus Learning’s Report 2023

New Delhi, 22 December 2023: Imarticus Learning, a pioneer in the Indian edtech sector, proudly announces the “Data Science Education Report 2023” in collaboration with Analytics Insights. According to the report, IITs secured the top three positions among 100 colleges across India in the Bachelor of Data Science degree category, while IIM Calcutta, in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur and ISI Kolkata, secured the top position among 151 institutes in the Master’s in Data Science category. The research not only provides rankings for institutes that provide these courses but also dives into the changing trends in data science and analytics education.

The report highlights the dynamic nature of the Data Science sector, making it a highly sought-after educational stream in the country. It underscores the opportunities presented by Big Data and Analytics courses in the IT sector,where the demand for educated technocrats in this field surpasses other IT employment opportunities significantly.

Within this rapidly evolving landscape of Data Science, it’s prominence as an educational field is growing in India. Highlighting the significance of Big Data and Analytics across multiple industries and domains, the report underscores the urgent need for skilled professionals to bridge the current data utilisation gap. Today, Data Science is pivotal in enabling informed decision-making, optimising business processes and resource allocation, improving healthcare outcomes, and tackling societal challenges.

In the Bachelor’s degree category, IITs lead the way, with IIT Hyderabad taking the top rank, closely followed by IIT Delhi. Notably, IIT Guwahati is the third-best educational institute for the Bachelor’s Data Science programme. The analysis finds a regional distribution, with the South Zone dominating at 35%, followed by the West Zone at 27%, the East Zone at 8%, the North Zone at 26%, and the Central Zone at 4%.

Following closely, IIT Hyderabad claimed the second spot, and IISC Bangalore secured the third position. The regional distribution shows the South Zone dominating with 43%, followed by the West Zone at 32%, the East Zone at 10%, the Central Zone at 1%, and the North Zone at 15%.

Additionally, the report provides insights into Ph.D. programs in Data Science, revealing a regional distribution as follows: 30% in the South Zone, 43% in the West Zone, 17% in the East Zone, and 9% in the North Zone.

For Executive Programs in Data Science, the distribution is detailed as 21% in the South Zone, 44% in the West Zone, 12% in the East Zone, 18% in the North Zone, and 6% in the Central Zone. Notable top institutions offering these executive programs include ISB Hyderabad in the South, IIT Hyderabad in the South, and NMIMS Global Access School for Continuing Education with a pan-India presence and a multifaceted approach.

The report predicts that India’s data science education market will rise at a CAGR of 57.52%, from $204.23Mn in 2023 to $1.391Bn by 2028. The big data and analytics job market is expected to grow from 215K positions in 2023 to over 338K by 2028, with major recruiters such as Amazon, AWS, Bain and Company, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, and Google offering competitive yearly remuneration packages ranging from Rs 6.5 lakhs to Rs 35.1 lakhs.

Similarly, the worldwide data science education market is predicted to reach $378.7 billion by 2030, with a 25% increase in demand for data scientists across industries such as healthcare, banking, and retail. Furthermore, the report addresses AI trends, government initiatives in AI education, and the establishment of three National AI Institutes in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Pune.

The report concludes that Big Data analytics is expanding at an unprecedented pace, and India has become one of the best places for anyone seeking a career in this industry. “Organisations from all over the world are trying to expand their presence in India as the nation solidifies its position as a major global hub for data to take advantage of its enormous talent pool and fully realise the enormous potential of data analytics,” states the report.
