On August 19, 2025, the University of Mumbai announced the postponement of all examinations scheduled for August 20, 2025, due to severe weather conditions and related transport disruptions across the city. The decision was made in response to a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, leading to widespread waterlogging and significant disruptions to public transport services.
The university cited student safety as the primary concern, noting that heavy rainfall caused severe commuting challenges, including flooded streets and halted transportation networks such as local trains and buses. Mumbai recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period, with areas like Kurla, Dadar, Andheri, and Sion experiencing significant waterlogging, and the Mithi River nearing its danger mark.
The postponement applies to both Summer 2025 and Winter 2025 session exams, covering undergraduate and postgraduate courses across various departments and affiliated colleges. This decision follows a similar rescheduling of exams originally set for August 19, 2025, to August 23, 2025, due to the same weather concerns.
The university has stated that fresh dates for the August 20 exams will be announced soon, with no changes to the exam timings or venues. Students are advised to regularly check the official university website (mu.ac.in) or communications from their affiliated colleges for the latest updates on the revised examination schedule.
The heavy rainfall and subsequent disruptions align with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) efforts to ensure public safety during this period of extreme weather. The university’s proactive measure reflects a commitment to prioritizing student welfare amidst challenging conditions.
