Tamil Nadu Distributes Free Laptops to 284 College Students

Chennai, January 28, 2026 — The Tamil Nadu government has distributed free laptops to 284 college students to promote digital learning. The initiative covers students from arts, science, engineering, agriculture, and medical streams.

Distribution Ceremony Held in Chennai

The laptops were handed over at a function in Chennai. The event was attended by government officials and college representatives. Students from different disciplines received the devices under the first phase of the programme.

Officials said the scheme aims to support students who lack access to digital tools.

Part of ‘Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil’ Scheme

The distribution is part of the state government’s digital initiative called ‘Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil’ (The World in Your Hands). Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the scheme earlier this month.

Under the first phase, the government plans to distribute 10 lakh laptops to college students across Tamil Nadu.

Focus on Digital and Technical Skills

The scheme seeks to improve digital literacy among students. It also aims to prepare them for careers in technology-driven sectors such as IT and artificial intelligence.

Officials said laptops will help students access online classes, research material, and skill-based training programmes.

Statewide Rollout in Coming Months

So far, 284 students have received laptops under the scheme. More students will benefit in the coming months as the programme expands across the state.

Colleges will identify eligible students for the next phase of distribution.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The government said the scheme will reduce the digital gap among students. It will ensure equal access to education resources for students from all backgrounds.

The programme reflects the state’s focus on modernising higher education through technology.
