Students Boycott Mid-Term Exams at Indian Institute of Management Nagpur

Students at IIM Nagpur staged a major protest after disciplinary action was taken against several classmates for attending an off-campus party. The incident led to a boycott of mid-term examinations and a sit-in demonstration outside the director’s office, drawing attention to concerns over fairness and disciplinary procedures on campus.

Around 400 Students Join Protest

Nearly 400 students gathered outside the administrative block, refusing to appear for scheduled mid-term exams. Protesters said the punishment imposed on their peers was disproportionate and created fear and uncertainty among the student community.

Students raised slogans and demanded immediate dialogue with the institute’s leadership to review the disciplinary decision.

Allegations of Gender Bias and Excessive Punishment

The protesting students alleged that the disciplinary action showed signs of gender-biased enforcement. They claimed that rules were applied unevenly and that the penalties were harsher than required for a first-time violation.

Student representatives stated that the punishment could damage academic records and future career prospects, which they described as an excessive response to a social gathering held off campus.

Institute Cites Policy Compliance

The institute administration maintained that the action was taken strictly in accordance with the code of conduct and existing hostel and student discipline policies. Officials said the measures were necessary to uphold institutional standards and ensure student safety.

At the same time, the management indicated that the matter could be reviewed after listening to student concerns.

Dialogue Sought to Resolve Standoff

Following the protest, discussions between student representatives and the administration were initiated. Students demanded:

  • Withdrawal or reduction of penalties
  • A transparent and uniform disciplinary framework
  • Assurance against selective or biased enforcement

The administration reportedly assured students that their grievances would be examined and that a review committee could be formed if required.

Academic Schedule Affected

The boycott disrupted the mid-term examination schedule, creating uncertainty about rescheduling and evaluation. Faculty members expressed concern about prolonged disruptions affecting the academic calendar.

Broader Debate on Campus Discipline

The incident has sparked a wider debate on campus discipline, student freedoms, and the balance between institutional authority and individual rights. Education experts note that such situations highlight the need for clearly defined, transparent disciplinary mechanisms and open communication channels between students and management.

For now, the situation remains under review as both sides work toward a resolution to restore normal academic activities.
