New Delhi, October 7, 2025 – As the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG 2025 counseling enters its third round, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has emphasized expansions in MBBS seats and streamlined counseling procedures as pivotal elements in ensuring broader access to medical education. With over 5,600 seats up for grabs in this phase, including newly added capacities in government and ESIC-affiliated institutions, Round 3 represents a critical juncture for thousands of aspiring doctors. The process, which began on September 29, 2025, is set to conclude with seat allotment results on October 8, offering fresh opportunities amid ongoing updates to address vacancies and candidate needs.
In a significant development, the MCC has augmented the seat matrix for NEET UG 2025 Round 3 by incorporating 138 additional MBBS seats across multiple government and Employee’s State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) medical colleges. This expansion, announced on October 4, 2025, via the official MCC website (mcc.nic.in), aims to maximize admissions and reduce the backlog of eligible candidates. Key additions include new intakes at ESIC Medical College & Hospital in Andheri, Mumbai (Maharashtra), with reserved seats for Backward Classes (BC), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Open Category (OP), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Further bolstering this initiative, eight more MBBS seats from a Punjab-based medical college have been integrated into the Round 3 pool, as notified on October 6, 2025. These expansions build on prior rounds, where Round 2 alone saw 1,134 new MBBS and BDS seats added, including 197 at ESIC Medical College, Hyderabad, and Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belagavi. Overall, the total available seats in Round 3 now encompass 5,658 MBBS, BDS, and BSc Nursing positions under the All India Quota (AIQ), deemed universities, central universities, and other participating bodies. This strategic increase underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing medical infrastructure and addressing the growing demand for healthcare professionals.
The counseling mechanism remains the cornerstone of NEET UG admissions, with Round 3 designed to prioritize equity through reservations and flexible participation options. The Government of India has upheld a 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC Non-Creamy Layer) and 10% for EWS within the 15% AIQ seats, ensuring inclusive representation in MBBS and BDS programs. This round accommodates a diverse pool of candidates, including first-time registrants, those seeking seat upgrades from previous rounds, and individuals who failed to report to allotted colleges earlier.
A notable facilitation is the extended resignation window for Round 2 allottees, now available until 5:00 P.M. on October 1, 2025, exclusively for unreported seats. This adjustment prevents unnecessary vacancies and allows candidates to realign preferences without penalties. Additionally, the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) portal for certificate generation is active until 5:00 P.M. on October 7, 2025, enabling eligible applicants to obtain certifications from designated MCC centers in compliance with National Medical Commission (NMC) norms. The online process—encompassing registration, choice filling, and fee payments—continues to be user-friendly, with a non-refundable counseling fee structure that includes security deposits varying by category.
Round 3 kicked off with registration and choice filling on September 29 and 30, 2025, respectively, both deadlines extended to 10:00 A.M. on October 5, 2025, to accommodate more participants. As of October 7, 2025, the process is in its final stretch, with seat allotment results slated for release on October 8, 2025. Candidates must complete institute reporting by October 19, 2025, to secure their spots, failing which seats may revert to the stray vacancy round on October 29, 2025.
The MCC has also revised the overall schedule to incorporate these seat expansions, ensuring no disruptions. For state-specific quotas (85% seats), authorities like the Uttar Pradesh NEET portal (upneet.gov.in) have aligned their timelines, with UP’s Round 3 choice filling commencing October 11, 2025. A total of 12,901 new allotments and 2,420 upgrades were recorded in Round 2, setting a positive precedent for Round 3’s outcomes. Prospective candidates are urged to monitor mcc.nic.in for real-time notifications, including the updated seat matrix PDFs.
These expansions and counseling enhancements signal a proactive approach to tackling seat shortages in India’s medical ecosystem, potentially increasing the annual MBBS intake by several hundred spots. As Round 3 unfolds, it not only provides a second chance for many but also reinforces the NEET framework’s role in merit-based, reservation-sensitive admissions. With the academic session 2025-26 underway, these developments promise to fortify the nation’s healthcare workforce, benefiting both students and the public at large.
