The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) continues to implement student-friendly reforms aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Two significant developments have emerged recently: the introduction of biannual board exams for Class 10 starting in 2026, and a minor rescheduling of certain exams in the ongoing 2026 board timetable for both Class 10 and 12.
In a major step to reduce exam-related stress and provide greater flexibility, CBSE will conduct Class 10 board exams twice a year beginning with the 2026 academic session.
This reform, approved in mid-2025 after stakeholder feedback, aims to eliminate the “high-stakes” pressure of a single annual exam. As Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan noted, it promotes a “joyful learning environment” and aligns with global practices like multiple test attempts in systems such as the SAT.
While currently limited to Class 10, CBSE has indicated potential extension to Class 12 in future years. This change benefits over 20 lakh students annually by offering a second chance within the same year, reducing anxiety from illness, poor performance, or unforeseen circumstances.
In a separate update today, CBSE announced the postponement of specific exams originally scheduled for March 3, 2026, due to administrative reasons. This affects minor subjects and does not impact major papers.
All other dates in the 2026 timetable remain unchanged. The main board exams for both classes commenced on February 17, 2026, with sufficient gaps between subjects to aid preparation. Schools have been instructed to inform students and parents immediately, and the revised dates will reflect on admit cards.
These changes reflect CBSE’s commitment to making education more holistic and less stressful. The biannual system for Class 10 encourages continuous learning over rote memorization, while the rescheduling ensures smooth conduct without broader disruptions.

As we approach the new year, these reforms signal a positive shift toward student-centric assessment in Indian schooling. Stay tuned for more updates on results and further NEP implementations!
