December 30, 2025
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) continues to implement student-friendly reforms aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Two significant developments have emerged recently: the introduction of biannual board exams for Class 10 starting in 2026, and a minor rescheduling of certain exams in the ongoing 2026 board timetable for both Class 10 and 12.
Twice-a-Year Board Exams for Class 10 from 2026
In a major step to reduce exam-related stress and provide greater flexibility, CBSE will conduct Class 10 board exams twice a year beginning with the 2026 academic session.
- Phase 1 (Mandatory): Held in February (typically February 17 to March 10, 2026). All students must appear for this exam, which covers the full syllabus.
- Phase 2 (Optional): Scheduled in May (around May 15 to June 1, 2026). Students who pass Phase 1 can opt to retake up to three subjects to improve their scores.
- The best score from the two attempts will be considered final.
- Internal assessments and practicals will be conducted only once during the session.
This reform, approved in mid-2025 after stakeholder feedback, aims to eliminate the “high-stakes” pressure of a single annual exam. As Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan noted, it promotes a “joyful learning environment” and aligns with global practices like multiple test attempts in systems such as the SAT.
While currently limited to Class 10, CBSE has indicated potential extension to Class 12 in future years. This change benefits over 20 lakh students annually by offering a second chance within the same year, reducing anxiety from illness, poor performance, or unforeseen circumstances.
Rescheduling of March 3, 2026 Exams
In a separate update today, CBSE announced the postponement of specific exams originally scheduled for March 3, 2026, due to administrative reasons. This affects minor subjects and does not impact major papers.
- Class 10: Exams for subjects like Tibetan, German, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Japanese, Spanish, Elements of Book Keeping and Accountancy, and others have been shifted to March 11, 2026.
- Class 12: The Legal Studies exam has been moved to April 10, 2026.
All other dates in the 2026 timetable remain unchanged. The main board exams for both classes commenced on February 17, 2026, with sufficient gaps between subjects to aid preparation. Schools have been instructed to inform students and parents immediately, and the revised dates will reflect on admit cards.
What This Means for Students and Parents
These changes reflect CBSE’s commitment to making education more holistic and less stressful. The biannual system for Class 10 encourages continuous learning over rote memorization, while the rescheduling ensures smooth conduct without broader disruptions.
Students preparing for future cycles should:
- Focus on consistent study habits.
- Check the official CBSE website (cbse.gov.in) regularly for updates.
- Practice with sample papers aligned to the latest patterns.
As we approach the new year, these reforms signal a positive shift toward student-centric assessment in Indian schooling. Stay tuned for more updates on results and further NEP implementations!
