Mumbai, September 23, 2025 – In a groundbreaking initiative to ignite scientific curiosity among young minds, the Maharashtra government has announced plans to send 51 top-performing school students annually on an educational tour to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States. Dubbed the ‘Chief Minister Vidyarthi Vigyan Vari’ scheme, this program is designed to reward innovation in science projects and encourage budding researchers to dream bigger.
The proposal, which received in-principle approval from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in June 2025, is now awaiting final funding clearance from the state. If implemented, it could mark a significant step in promoting STEM education across the state, potentially setting a precedent for other regions in India.
At the heart of this initiative is the ‘Chief Minister Vidyarthi Vigyan Vari’ scheme, a multi-tiered competition aimed at recognizing not just winners, but all dedicated participants in science fairs. Minister of State for School Education, Pankaj Bhoyar, emphasized the program’s goal to extend encouragement beyond mere prizes.
“We give prizes to the winners, but the students who do not win also put in great effort. We want to recognize them too, and that is why this plan was made,” Bhoyar stated. The scheme builds on existing science project competitions, transforming them into gateways for real-world inspiration.
The program unfolds across three levels, offering progressive rewards to participants based on their performance:
This structured progression ensures that students from rural and urban areas alike have equitable opportunities to engage with science beyond the classroom.
While the domestic components of the scheme will be covered by DPDC funds, the international NASA leg requires state-level approval due to its substantial cost. Officials estimate an annual expenditure of approximately Rs 3 crore solely for the NASA trips, covering travel, accommodation, and educational activities for the 51 students.
A senior official from the School Education Department noted, “The plan is still waiting for final approval even though Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis cleared it in June 2025. We are waiting for the funds to be cleared soon.” Once sanctioned, the scheme could roll out as early as the next academic year, aligning with Maharashtra’s broader push for enhanced science education funding.
In a related development, the government has also hiked the prize money for state-level winners from Rs 5,000 to Rs 51,000, further incentivizing participation.
Minister Bhoyar highlighted the long-term vision: “We want them to go beyond one project and move further into scientific research. This will allow students from across Maharashtra to visit science centers and think of bigger ideas for the future.” By exposing students to world-class institutions like NASA, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between school-level curiosity and professional careers in STEM fields.
This move comes amid a series of similar efforts in the state. For instance, Nashik’s Zilla Parishad recently announced plans to fund NASA trips for its ‘Super 50’ students who secured admissions to IITs, underscoring a growing emphasis on rewarding academic excellence with global exposure.
Experts believe that if successful, Vidyarthi Vigyan Vari could inspire other states to adopt comparable programs, fostering a nationwide culture of innovation. As Maharashtra positions itself as a hub for scientific talent, today’s schoolchildren may well become tomorrow’s pioneers in space exploration and beyond.
