Internationalization of Indian Education: NEP 2020 Paves the Way for Global Campuses

New Delhi, June 10, 2025 – At the ABP News SmartEd Conclave 2025, Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the transformative potential of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in positioning India as a global education hub. A key highlight of his keynote address was the announcement that 15 world-class foreign universities are set to establish campuses in India by next year, a move aimed at enhancing access to quality education and fostering international collaboration.

The NEP 2020, a cornerstone of India’s educational reform, prioritizes the internationalization of higher education to attract students from African and Asian countries. Speaking at the conclave, Pradhan outlined how policy amendments have streamlined regulations to allow foreign universities to set up campuses in India, marking a significant step toward globalizing the nation’s education ecosystem. “In the coming days, India will become a favored destination for education for African and Asian countries,” he stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to creating a self-sustaining ecosystem where education and employment drive each other.

The ABP Live SmartEd Conclave 2025, held on June 9, brought together education leaders, policymakers, and innovators to discuss India’s ambition to bridge the gap between curriculum, technology, and practical skills. Panels at the event explored themes such as India’s bilingual advantage and the role of EdTech startups in revolutionizing education. Notable speakers, including Beas Dev Ralhan of Next Education and Anil Nagar of Adda247, shared insights on aligning education with global standards to enhance employability.

The initiative to welcome foreign universities aligns with the NEP 2020’s vision of fostering global collaborations and boosting India’s appeal as an affordable, culturally rich destination for international students. Currently, around 50,000 foreign students study in India, but the government aims to increase this number to 200,000 through programs like ‘Study in India.’ Institutions such as the University of Wollongong and Deakin University from Australia have already established or are developing campuses in Gujarat’s GIFT City, while the University of Southampton (UK) has secured approval for a campus in Gurugram.

Pradhan highlighted that the presence of foreign universities will expose Indian students to global standards, equipping them with skills and networks that enhance career prospects both domestically and internationally. This move is expected to retain talent within India while attracting students from neighboring regions, particularly from African and Asian nations, positioning India as a competitive player in the global education market.

However, challenges remain. Experts at the conclave noted that infrastructural constraints and the need for streamlined policies are critical to ensuring the success of these international campuses. Additionally, debates around the NEP 2020’s language policies, particularly the three-language formula, have sparked concerns in some states, with critics arguing it may impose Hindi in non-Hindi-speaking regions. Despite these hurdles, the government remains optimistic about creating a robust, inclusive education system that aligns with 21st-century needs.

The ABP News SmartEd Conclave 2025 concluded with a call for collaboration between policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to realize India’s vision of becoming a global education hub. As the country prepares to welcome these 15 foreign universities, the focus remains on leveraging innovation, technology, and international partnerships to transform India’s education landscape.
