Indian Nursing Council (INC)

The Indian Nursing Council (INC) is an autonomous statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It was established in 1947 through the Indian Nursing Council Act and is responsible for ensuring uniform standards of nursing education and practice across the country.

Functions of the Indian Nursing Council:

  1. Establishing and Monitoring Standards:
    • The INC sets the standards for nursing education and ensures that these standards are maintained across the various nursing institutions in India.
    • It prescribes the minimum educational qualifications required for admission to different nursing courses.
  2. Recognition of Institutions and Qualifications:

  4. Development and Revision of Syllabus:
    • The INC is responsible for developing and periodically revising the syllabus for various nursing programs to keep pace with advancements in the healthcare field.
    • It prescribes the duration, curriculum, and examination patterns for nursing courses.
  5. Maintenance of Nurses Register:
    • The INC maintains a national register of all qualified nursing personnel in India. This includes Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Midwives (RMs), and health visitors.
    • It works in coordination with state nursing councils to ensure proper registration and regulation of nursing personnel.
  6. Advisory Role:
    • The INC provides advice to state nursing councils, examining boards, and the Government of India on matters related to nursing education and practice.
    • It collaborates with international nursing bodies to align Indian nursing standards with global best practices.
  7. Promotion of Research and Continuing Education:
    • The INC encourages research in nursing and related fields to enhance the quality of nursing care.
    • It promotes continuing education programs to help nurses update their knowledge and skills.
  8. Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct:
    • The INC prescribes a code of ethics and professional conduct for nurses to ensure that they adhere to high standards of professionalism.
