India has emerged as a global leader in the adoption of Generative AI (GenAI), showcasing remarkable progress in integrating this transformative technology across various sectors. In 2024 alone, India recorded 1.3 million enrollments in GenAI courses, the highest globally. This surge reflects the country’s growing appetite for AI-driven innovation and its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements.
The adoption of GenAI in India is not limited to education; it is also reshaping industries such as IT services, healthcare, and creative fields. For instance, the IT-enabled services (ITeS) sector, which powers 58% of global outsourcing, is at a pivotal moment. GenAI is seen as a potential trillion-dollar opportunity, capable of revolutionizing workflows and boosting productivity. However, challenges such as integration issues and workforce enablement need to be addressed to fully harness its potential.
Despite India’s leadership in GenAI adoption, there is a notable gender disparity. Women account for only 29.6% of GenAI learners in the country, even though they make up 40% of all learners on platforms like Coursera. Confidence gaps, time constraints, and a lack of female role models are some of the barriers hindering their participation. Addressing these challenges through targeted interventions and mentorship programs could ensure more inclusive growth in the AI sector.
India’s proactive approach to GenAI adoption positions it as a key player in shaping the future of AI on a global scale. By addressing existing challenges and fostering an inclusive environment, the country can unlock the full potential of GenAI, driving innovation and economic growth.
