Thane, August 20, 2025, 12:10 PM IST – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across parts of Maharashtra, prompting authorities to announce the closure of all schools, colleges, anganwadis, and training centres in Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai, and Lonavala for today. The precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of students, staff, and residents amid concerns over potential flooding, waterlogging, and transportation disruptions caused by the severe weather.
The IMD’s red alert, the highest level of weather warning, indicates that rainfall exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours is likely in these regions, posing significant risks to public safety and infrastructure. Local weather reports suggest that a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea has intensified, contributing to the extreme weather conditions expected to persist throughout the day. In addition to heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms may further complicate travel and outdoor activities.
District administrations in Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai, and Lonavala acted swiftly in response to the IMD’s warning, ordering the immediate suspension of operations at all educational institutions and anganwadis. Training centres, including those for vocational and professional courses, have also been directed to remain closed to minimize risks. Authorities have advised parents and guardians to ensure that children remain indoors and avoid areas prone to flooding, such as low-lying regions and riverbanks.
Municipal corporations in the affected areas have activated emergency response teams to monitor the situation and address potential issues such as waterlogging, fallen trees, or power outages. Residents have been urged to avoid non-essential travel, secure loose objects outdoors, and stay updated through official channels, including local news outlets and government websites, for real-time weather updates and safety advisories.
The closure of educational institutions has disrupted the daily schedules of thousands of students and staff, with many schools shifting to online modes of communication to share updates on assignments and rescheduling plans. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in coordination with neighboring civic bodies, has also deployed additional personnel to clear drainage systems and prevent water accumulation in flood-prone areas.
The IMD has indicated that the red alert may extend into tomorrow depending on the progression of the weather system, and residents are advised to remain vigilant. For further updates on the reopening of schools, colleges, anganwadis, and training centres, parents and students are encouraged to check with their respective institutions or local authorities.
In case of emergencies, residents can contact local disaster management helplines or municipal authorities for assistance. The focus remains on ensuring public safety as the region braces for the impact of this severe weather event.
