Chennai, September 15, 2025 – IIT Madras is India’s best engineering college for the eighth year in a row, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings released today.
The top five spots stayed with the IIT family:
More than 1,500 colleges were judged on teaching quality, research, student success, diversity, and reputation. This year, a new “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDG) category was added to reward eco-friendly projects.
| Rank | College | Score (out of 100) | Standout Strengths |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | IIT Madras | 89.46 | Top research, strong industry ties, 25% women students |
| 2 | IIT Delhi | 87.02 | Green tech, 150+ patents in renewable energy |
| 3 | IIT Bombay | 84.71 | 95% placement rate, biotech & materials science |
| 4 | IIT Kanpur | 82.13 | Rural tech programs, global partnerships |
| 5 | IIT Roorkee | 78.95 | Eco-campus upgrades, inclusive policies |
Other strong performers include IIT Kharagpur (6th), IIT Hyderabad (7th), and NIT Tiruchirappalli (8th)—its first time in the top 10.
For the first time, NIRF gave points for work tied to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals—think clean energy, zero hunger, and climate action.
Over 300 colleges shared green projects, from biodegradable plastics to AI tools for smarter farming.
“This new category pushes campuses to fight real-world problems,” said IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti.
Colleges are scored on five areas:
Data is self-reported but double-checked by auditors.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan:
“NIRF guides students to colleges building a self-reliant, sustainable India.”
Student Ananya Sharma (IIT Madras):
“Being #1 motivates us to solve bigger problems.”
Tata Group HR Head:
“IIT graduates remain our first choice for innovation and skills.”
Some experts want more weight for state universities to balance growth across regions.
The rankings will shape 2026 admissions. Aspiring engineers eyeing JEE Advanced now have fresh data—and a clear message: top colleges must now excel in both labs and the planet.
