IIT Madras Tops India’s Engineering Colleges Again in NIRF 2025 Rankings

Chennai, September 15, 2025 – IIT Madras is India’s best engineering college for the eighth year in a row, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings released today.

The top five spots stayed with the IIT family:

  1. IIT Madras
  2. IIT Delhi
  3. IIT Bombay
  4. IIT Kanpur
  5. IIT Roorkee

More than 1,500 colleges were judged on teaching quality, research, student success, diversity, and reputation. This year, a new “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDG) category was added to reward eco-friendly projects.

The Top 5: Why They Excel

New Focus: Sustainability

For the first time, NIRF gave points for work tied to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals—think clean energy, zero hunger, and climate action.

  • IIT Madras won the SDG subcategory with solar microgrids and low-cost water filters used in Tamil Nadu villages.
  • IIT Delhi ranked high for electric vehicle labs.

Over 300 colleges shared green projects, from biodegradable plastics to AI tools for smarter farming.

“This new category pushes campuses to fight real-world problems,” said IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti.

How the Rankings Work

Colleges are scored on five areas:

  1. Teaching & Resources (30%) – faculty quality, labs, spending per student
  2. Research (30%) – papers, patents, citations
  3. Graduation Outcomes (20%) – jobs, salaries, higher studies
  4. Diversity & Inclusion (10%) – women, reserved categories, regional reach
  5. Reputation (10%) – surveys of 50,000+ academics and employers

Data is self-reported but double-checked by auditors.

What People Are Saying

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan:
“NIRF guides students to colleges building a self-reliant, sustainable India.”

Student Ananya Sharma (IIT Madras):
“Being #1 motivates us to solve bigger problems.”

Tata Group HR Head:
“IIT graduates remain our first choice for innovation and skills.”

Some experts want more weight for state universities to balance growth across regions.

What’s Next?

The rankings will shape 2026 admissions. Aspiring engineers eyeing JEE Advanced now have fresh data—and a clear message: top colleges must now excel in both labs and the planet.
