Chennai, September 15, 2025 – IIT Madras is India’s best engineering college for the eighth year in a row, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings released today.
The top five spots stayed with the IIT family:
- IIT Madras
- IIT Delhi
- IIT Bombay
- IIT Kanpur
- IIT Roorkee
More than 1,500 colleges were judged on teaching quality, research, student success, diversity, and reputation. This year, a new “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDG) category was added to reward eco-friendly projects.

New Focus: Sustainability
For the first time, NIRF gave points for work tied to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals—think clean energy, zero hunger, and climate action.
- IIT Madras won the SDG subcategory with solar microgrids and low-cost water filters used in Tamil Nadu villages.
- IIT Delhi ranked high for electric vehicle labs.
Over 300 colleges shared green projects, from biodegradable plastics to AI tools for smarter farming.
“This new category pushes campuses to fight real-world problems,” said IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti.

- Research (30%) – papers, patents, citations
- Graduation Outcomes (20%) – jobs, salaries, higher studies

- Reputation (10%) – surveys of 50,000+ academics and employers
