The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen research collaboration and create a seamless academic pathway from BTech at IITGN to MTech at IISc. Signed on 17 November 2025, the partnership combines the research strengths of IISc with IITGN’s student-centric undergraduate ecosystem to expand opportunities for high-performing engineering students and early-career researchers.
Under the MoU, IISc and IITGN will jointly promote advanced research, academic exchange, and mobility of students and faculty across both campuses. The agreement institutionalises long-term cooperation rather than one-off projects, positioning the alliance as a model for future collaborations between IISc and other IITs.
Key components of the framework include:
A central feature of the collaboration is a direct pathway that allows eligible IITGN students, after completing their third year of BTech, to join IISc’s MTech programmes through a competitive selection process, typically without the standard GATE route. Students who fulfill all academic requirements will receive a BTech degree from IITGN and an MTech degree from IISc, effectively accelerating their progression into high-end research and specialised technical careers.
This pathway is aimed at high-performing undergraduates who demonstrate strong research potential and are keen to enter advanced programmes in core and interdisciplinary engineering and science domains at an earlier stage. IISc offers more than two dozen MTech specialisations, many of which are open to graduates of Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), and the MoU leverages this flexibility to benefit IITGN students in particular.
The MoU explicitly encourages faculty and student teams from both institutes to undertake joint research projects in areas of mutual strength and national relevance. Indicative domains include advanced materials and nanotechnology, artificial intelligence and data science, sustainable and energy technologies, cyber-physical systems and robotics, and biomedical engineering and healthcare technologies.
Beyond projects, the partnership allows research scholars and students to access each other’s laboratories, high-end equipment, and specialised research infrastructure, which would otherwise be limited by geography. This shared access is expected to expand experimental capabilities, support interdisciplinary work, and shorten the time from concept to proof-of-concept in several frontier areas.
The collaboration includes a broader academic exchange component, enabling IITGN students to spend time at IISc for coursework, research internships, workshops, and short-term research engagements. Participants will work under joint mentorship from faculty of both institutions, gaining exposure to distinct academic cultures and diverse research groups.
Joint symposia, specialised schools, and thematic workshops will be organised on both campuses to bring together researchers, doctoral scholars, and senior undergraduates. These activities are designed to build early familiarity with cutting-edge research problems and to expand peer networks across the two premier institutes.
IISc’s leadership has framed this initiative as a template for similar MoUs with other IITs, with the aim of integrating India’s top technical institutes into a more fluid, research-driven ecosystem. IITGN’s leadership has emphasised the student-first nature of the agreement, noting that the alliance opens new academic and research avenues while strengthening institutional ties with IISc.
By combining IISc’s deep research pedigree with IITGN’s agile and innovation-focused undergraduate environment, the partnership is expected to contribute to India’s broader goals in science, technology, and high-end innovation. For students, the collaboration offers a faster and more structured route into advanced research careers; for the institutions, it promises a stronger pipeline of talent and more impactful, jointly executed research programmes.
