Exciting Developments in Indian Higher Education: Empowering Innovators and Creative Minds

December 31, 2025

As we wrap up 2025, India’s education landscape continues to evolve with groundbreaking partnerships that bridge academia, industry, and global expertise. Two recent announcements stand out: IIT Bombay’s collaboration with Groww Foundation to nurture deep-tech student innovators, and GLS University’s launch of a pioneering global design program with Australia’s SAE Institute. These initiatives highlight India’s push toward innovation-driven education, equipping students with skills for tomorrow’s challenges.

IIT Bombay and Groww Foundation: Fueling Deep-Tech Innovation

In a landmark move announced on December 10, 2025, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) partnered with Groww Foundation to accelerate deep-tech innovation and student entrepreneurship. Anchored at IIT Bombay’s Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship (DSSE), this multi-year initiative aims to transform academic ideas into real-world solutions.

Key highlights include:

  • Groww Innovation Space: A state-of-the-art 15,000 sq. ft. facility providing workspace, infrastructure, mentorship, and evaluation frameworks for early-stage innovators.
  • Four-Year Support Program: Approximately 100 student-faculty teams per year (totaling nearly 400 over four years) will receive funding, guidance, and prototype development support as part of entrepreneurship and capstone coursework. High-performing teams may access incubation opportunities.
  • Annual Grand Challenge: An interdisciplinary competition inviting students, researchers, and faculty to tackle pressing issues in areas like holistic education, sustainable livelihoods, healthcare, and women’s empowerment.

Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, emphasized that this partnership strengthens India’s deep-tech pipeline by creating a seamless pathway from ideation to implementation. Kalpana Swaminathan, Head of Groww Foundation, added that it unlocks the potential of aspiring innovators through resources and mentorship, fostering research-driven entrepreneurship for sustainable growth.

This collaboration underscores the growing role of philanthropic support in higher education, blending IIT Bombay’s academic excellence with Groww’s vision for inclusive innovation.

GLS University and SAE Institute: Launching India’s First Global B.Design (Hons.) Program

On December 8, 2025, GLS University in Ahmedabad made history by partnering with Australia’s renowned SAE Institute (part of the Navitas group) to introduce the Global B.Design (Honours) program—the first of its kind in India.

This four-year undergraduate course specializes in:

  • Animation & VFX
  • Game Development

Designed with a project-based learning approach, it offers hands-on training using cutting-edge software, studio environments, and production tools from day one. Students benefit from global immersion opportunities, exchange programs, and access to SAE’s international industry network across 47 campuses in 20 countries.

Graduates will earn dual recognition: a B.Design (Hons.) degree from GLS University and an internationally accredited qualification from SAE Institute, enhancing global employability.

Sudhir Nanavati, President of GLS University, called it a milestone for India’s education system, providing world-class creative training at accessible costs. Dr. Chandni Kapadia, Executive Director, highlighted its role in empowering Indian youth to lead in the booming Animation, VFX, and Gaming sectors. Representatives from SAE and Navitas praised GLS as the ideal partner for SAE’s entry into India.

GLS University, established in 1927 by the Gujarat Law Society, is the exclusive Indian institution authorized to deliver SAE’s curriculum, marking a significant step in aligning Indian creative education with global standards.

Why These Partnerships Matter

These developments reflect broader trends in Indian higher education: industry-academia ties for tech entrepreneurship (as seen with IIT Bombay-Groww) and international collaborations for creative fields (GLS-SAE). They address skill gaps in deep-tech and digital media—sectors projected to drive India’s economic growth—while promoting interdisciplinary, hands-on learning.

As 2025 ends, such initiatives inspire hope for a more innovative and globally competitive India. Students now have stronger pathways to turn ideas into impact, whether building deep-tech startups or crafting the next blockbuster game.
