Decline in learning among Karnataka govt school students : Survey

Learning among high school students is not as good as compared to when they were in primary classes four years ago, according to the Census-based State Achievement Survey (CSAS) conducted for students of classes 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10 from select government schools for 2022-23.
A total of 2,11,843 students were covered under the survey conducted by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board under the school education department.
The last learning achievement survey was conducted in 2018-19 and a student who was in Class 6 then studies in Class 10 now. Compared to the 2018-19 state learning achievement survey, there is a significant decline in learning of these students going by their performance in 2022-23.

Class 8 students attained a learning achievement of only 51%, which was 50% in Class 9 and 55% Class 10. However, with interventions of activity-based lessons like ‘Nali-Kali’ in primary level, the learning achievement for Class 3 students was recorded at 83% while Class 5 students achieved 71%. The major decline was recorded in mathematics and science subjects wherein the students of Class 5 scored a learning achievement of 79% in science in 2018-19 which decreased to 37% when they reached Class 9. In mathematics the same set of students had scored 73% in 2018, which dropped to 39% (decrease by 34%), in 2022. Class 6 students who recorded a learning achievement of 70% in 2018, dropped to 57% in 2022.
The purpose of the survey was to study the learning status of all the students in various subjects and also to identify the basic facilities of the school, teacher qualification, mid-day meal scheme, teaching-learning environment, impact of various academic programmes and to understand the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on their learning abilities.
As part of the survey, subject-wise question papers with competency based multiple choice and descriptive type questions were given to students.
