A Milestone Visit: All India Schools Association (AISA) Explores WACE Adoption at Doon Valley International School

On a crisp November morning, the serene campus of Doon Valley International School in Dehradun welcomed a high-powered delegation from the All India Schools Association (AISA). The purpose of the visit was clear and ambitious: to explore the potential adoption of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) across Indian schools, with Doon Valley International School serving as a pioneering case study.

Led by AISA’s National President Mr. Sumeet Mehta and General Secretary Dr. Anjali Sharma, the delegation comprised principals and academic coordinators from leading schools across Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Their mission was to understand firsthand how an internationally benchmarked curriculum like WACE can be seamlessly integrated into the Indian education ecosystem while preserving academic rigor and cultural relevance.

Why WACE? The Global Qualification Indian Students Deserve

The Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) is one of the most respected university entrance qualifications worldwide. Accepted by top universities in Australia, the UK, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and Europe, WACE offers Indian students a powerful alternative (or complement) to traditional boards such as CBSE, ICSE, and IB.

Key advantages that caught AISA’s attention:

  • Direct university admission without foundation years in most countries
  • Strong emphasis on critical thinking, research skills, and real-world application
  • Flexibility to combine WACE with CBSE/ISC for dual certification
  • Internationally moderated examinations ensuring credibility and fairness
  • Proven track record of graduates securing scholarships at Russell Group, Ivy League, and Group of Eight universities

A Day of Discovery and Dialogue

The visit began with a warm welcome by Doon Valley International School’s Chairman Mr. Rajeev Gupta and Principal Ms. Neena Bisht. Students presented a vibrant cultural program showcasing Uttarakhand’s heritage alongside a confident English-language debate on “Global Citizenship in the 21st Century” – a testament to the communication skills fostered by international curricula.

The delegation then toured state-of-the-art facilities, including:

  • Advanced STEM and robotics laboratories
  • Digital design and media studios
  • Dedicated WACE preparation and examination center

The highlight was an interactive session with current WACE students (Grades 11 & 12) who shared their experiences:

“WACE has taught us how to learn, not just what to learn. The research projects and external exams push us to think like university students already.”
— Aryan Sharma, Grade 12 WACE Student (2025 cohort)

Roundtable Discussions: Addressing Concerns, Building Consensus

In the closed-door roundtable, AISA representatives raised critical questions that resonate with school leaders nationwide:

  • How do we maintain Indian cultural values while adopting a Western curriculum?
  • What is the roadmap for teacher training and upskilling?
  • How affordable and scalable is WACE implementation for Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities?
  • Can students appear for Indian competitive exams (JEE, NEET, CLAT) alongside WACE?

Doon Valley International School’s leadership presented compelling data: 100% university placement for their 2024 WACE graduates, with 68% receiving scholarships ranging from 25% to 100% at destinations including University of Melbourne, UCL, University of Toronto, and NUS.

Most importantly, they demonstrated how WACE can be offered as a parallel stream, allowing schools to cater to diverse student aspirations for both international education and Indian competitive examinations.

A Vision for the Future

AISA President Mr. Sumeet Mehta summarized the visit powerfully:

“Today we have seen a working model of what Indian education can become – globally competitive yet rooted in our values. WACE is not about replacing Indian boards; it’s about expanding choices for our children. If Doon Valley International can successfully implement this in the hills of Dehradun, there is no reason schools across India cannot follow.”

The delegation left with a clear action plan:

  1. Formation of an AISA-WACE Task Force
  2. Pilot program invitations for interested member schools (2026–27 academic year)
  3. Nationwide webinars and workshops on international curriculum integration
  4. Collaboration with School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA), Western Australia for teacher accreditation

The Message is Clear

Indian students no longer need to choose between academic excellence at home and global opportunities abroad. With progressive schools like Doon Valley International leading the way and visionary bodies like AISA driving systemic change, a new era of borderless education is dawning.

The WACE revolution has found its Indian home—and it’s only just beginning.
